I had an outstanding dining experience here. I came here for their lunch buffet which they serve between 12-2 PM. Pretty steep price at roughly $37 per adult but at least the tip is "included". You get an amazing experience at Grand Hotel though. It really feels like you stepped back in time since the hotel has similar decor / style like it had 50 years ago. They have a pretty good number of cold cuts. Their shrimp and smoked fish was really good as well as different cold beef cuts. They also have a good number of hot food dishes like turkey, asian beef, chicken breast and many more. For the finale, they have a large number of desserts. Their cherry cobbler was incredible. So was chocolate dipped strawberries, cannoli and blueberry pie. Everything tasted so good! The service was also top notch throughout the whole meal. I can't imagine you will get a better culinary experience anywhere else on the island.

We did the lunch buffet and really liked it. Was a pretty steep price at $37 a head but was really good. You're certainly paying for an experience with it. Try the potato salad and apple cobbler. Plus great ice tea and coffee. Wait staff was a little odd but quite a cool historic place.

Went down for the buffet breakfast and it was a sorry sight. It was packed and barely enough room to walk around tables. The rest of my party ordered from the short menu and the omelette looked good. I would suggest eating down the hill somewhere.

A solid 3 stars for this beautiful old dining room, where one gets served a multi course dinner in a way that makes you feel like you are part of an assembly line process. The food is pretty good and we enjoyed it. Adjust your expectations and you will fully enjoy an evening in a special spot.

Went to the grand for my honeymoon expecting top quality based on the price and reputation. We were jammed in the restaurant like sardines. The service wasn't personal at all and food was brought out non stop with no time to enjoy each course. I have been to several nice restaurants such as the capital grille and one would think the food quality would match the price, but not at the grand. The food comes straight out of a warmer and is not freshly prepared. I will never go back in my life. The restaurant relies solely on historical intrigue from guest and does nothing to match service level with cost to create value.

I've never had anything less than a top notch dining experience here. I love the fact that everyone is required to dress for dinner, although casual attire is still okay during breakfast and the luncheon buffet. It's the small things that matter here, from the five star service and ambiance to the creativity of the inspired menus and the quality of the food itself. When you dine in the Grand Hotel Dining Room, it's an experience you won't soon forget. If you're lucky enough to be seated near one of the expansive windows, you will be witness to some breathtaking views that only serve to enhance the overall dining experience. The decor and ambiance are not to be rivaled and the whole experience is definitely worth the money. It's "old world" elegance at its finest. As for the food, the breakfast and luncheon options are pretty diverse, with something to suit anyone's palette. They serve a huge variety of homemade pastries, fresh fruits, bagels, eggs, sausages, bacon, pancakes, waffles and more for breakfast, while the luncheon buffet is filled with refined menu items for all appetites. When it comes to dinner, the menus are rotated in an effort to prevent the average hotel guest from seeing a retread of the same menus night after night during their stay. Dinner menus are well-executed with scrupulous attention to the smallest details. The meals are prepared and plated in a five star manner and everything stands out for all the right reasons, from the helpful guidance of the somelier to the way dishes are presented and taste. The dessert menus are extensive and feature the best creme brulee that I've eaten anywhere. My favorite dishes have been the butternut squash soup and the rainbow trout with caprese salad. My husband and I both enjoyed the whitefish mousse immensely during a recent visit. Another time, we dined on the norwegian smoked salmon tartare and that tasted impeccable as well. The wine selections/pairings are something to boast about and the someliers have not once steered me wrong.

The restaurant is disappointing here. We decided to go here for brunch because we had heard great reviews about this hotel and were very disappointed. It was a brunch buffet and we walked through the line in disbelief. The salad vegetables were wilted, and did not look fresh. Many items just appeared pre-made and straight out of a container. It tasted worse than it looked. We actually ended up leaving our food and asking for the check and eating elsewhere.

The food, ambiance, service, attention to quality and details, and execution of the meal adds up to a five star dining experience in my book. Dinners are something special, with everyone dressed for the occasion. It definitely isn't a bunch of tourists in flip flops and tank tops shuffling around like they're eating at Applebee's, that is for certain. I appreciate the extra attention to fine details and high quality of the food and wine. Menus seem expertly prepared with consideration and thought. The presentation is beyond reproach. Who doesn't love having a sommelier at their table giving you tips about wine and food pairings? As for breakfast, the food options are both generous and delicious and the service is still too notch . It's not pretentious or boring, it's a class act to dine here and a true culinary experience.

It will be hard to forget eating at the Grand Hotel dining room on our recent stay at Mackinac Island. The expansive room was very picturesque with many windows drawing your eyes to the Straits of Mackinac. It's ambiance speaks to a time long ago of glamour while you in turn will feel very much the elegant lady being escorted on the arm of her gentleman. As it felt inappropriate in such surroundings, I did not take photos of our food, but I did take photos of the menus that were in our room for our perusal, so you can see what we had to choose from. Hubby chose the Foie Gras Torchon and I, the Mackinac Whitefish Mousse for our appetizer because Mackinac is known for it's whitefish. For our soup, we had the Chilled Butternut Squash with brioche croutons and Tuscan White Bean with chorizo sausage. Everyone is served a tasty Caprese Salad. My entree of Colorado Loin of Lamb with artichoke fritters, baked parmesan polenta, and Tasso Ham Gravy was among the top three entrees I have ever had!! Actually, I didn't think I cared very much for lamb before! Hubby's Sea Salt Crusted Prime Rib of Beef was delicious as well. How do you top that? With a Flourless Hazelnut Chocolate Cake and a Vanilla Creme Brulee, of course with an after dinner coffee. Every course we enjoyed was a feast for the eyes as well as our palates. Somewhere in the background you could hear someone talentedly tickling the ivories. There was a buffet for children if they preferred over the children's menu and they also cater to people with gluten sensitivities. Even if you aren't staying at the hotel, you can be part of their dining experience, too. They do ask that patrons dress up for dinner. It only added to the occasion. Ironically, there was not a pretentious, stuffy moment at all. The breakfast there the following morning was not a letdown after the previous evening. You could choose between various juices or a peaches and cream smoothie, hot/cold cereals, fruits and yogurts, eggs with hash and breakfast potatoes or omelettes, pastries, and after all that you still had your entree to choose. Mine was an Apricot-Cheesecake Stuffed Brioche Toast with a salty caramel sauce and Apple Smoked Bacon. I always try to order something that I wouldn't make at home and this definitely fit the bill. Oh my goodness, our dining experience was simply sumptuous. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

A fantastic place and the food is very nice. We were guests so we did the breakfast and dinners. Each course was nicely plated at dinner, and the beef medallion entrée was unbelievable - so tender and delicious. Cheesecake for desert was superb. All other courses were great. Service was fast and top notch. A lot of complaining here from people and, while you might expect a bit more for the cost of staying, this is New Americana at its best.

We stayed at the Grand and bought a package which included breakfast and dinner for two of each meal. Breakfast was really good, but for the price tag thats associated with it (even in a package) anything short of a kings feast wouldn't wow me. So I'll review it without considering price. Breakfast was really good, I recommend the grapefruit with caramelized sugar and the smoked salmon bagel. During breakfast the service is prompt. However, both during breakfast and even worse during dinner, you don't always get what you order. My smoked salmon bagel was supposed to include caviar and there wasn't any without any word from the server (not that I missed it, gross) and one night at dinner we all had brussel sprouts on our plates even though none of our meals were supposed to come with them. Every meal, every person there was at least one thing missing. I didn't care for dinner. The courses were all annoyingly small and you had to wait 15 minutes between the courses sometime while sitting there starving in your fancy clothes. The food itself was good but not stellar.

The atmosphere is worth the trip but don't expect the food to match, appetizers and soups/salads are great, main course is acceptable, I had the veal.

I had no idea that this dining room was so large which explains the very industrial approach. It is a well oiled machine and the service was good but the food left much to be desired. Dinner was fair, but the breakfast was just bad. We both ordered poached eggs which arrived promptly but had such a strong vinegar taste that they were inedible so we sent them back for scrambled eggs which were passable. Yes I know that when poaching eggs it is typical to put a LITTLE vinegar in the water to help the eggs hold their shape but I have never tasted anything like this before. Bleh!

Dinner and breakfast are included with hotel stay. Both good meals and there was a very good selection. Especially liked the steak carpaccio and the jumbo fries shrimp. The main entree for dinner is a very generous helping but nothing extraordinary. Had the white fish which was bland. Lamb shank was decent. The sides could be better. Breakfast was excellent

Seriously disappointed. We are staying in the hotel, and really looking forward the the experience. We called in advance (weeks) and requested a reservation and asked how the system worked. We were told no reservations needed and dining is first come first serve. We arrived and were seated by the buffet. When we asked if we could do a window seat, as 90% were open, they said they were all reserved. Most of those tables had not had a first seating by the time we left. Then, we got a waitress, who was quite nice, but took orders, brought first course before I even got the wine list, ( which I had to ask for). Food was terrible. They have an elaborate menu, of 5 courses, but the food is pre-prepared and in a warmer before delivery. It's just not good. For the price, the history is interesting but its unacceptable to think that dinner service is worth it. I was and am very upset about my evening. No amount of $21 Macallan 12 drinks will help my anger, despite me trying.

I have eaten at the finest restaurants from New York to LA. The sommelier was an asian girl (god help her) that knew nothing about wines. I say god help her and to the entire staff for that matter because somewhere hidden from view must have been a master watching over his chattel. I felt like I was on the titanic before it hit an iceberg. We had previously stayed at the Greenbriar in Sulfer Springs West Virginia where the buildings were similarly built and styled by the same decorator. My experience there was a pleasurable one. Overall I felt that the staff was not competant in completeing a simple task such as bringing cream with coffee and the food was dished out like a bad wedding. Everything was prepared in advanced and shoved out in front of you whether you were finished with your course or not. If you must go just pay the $10.00 to look around and don't wast you're money on the food or lodging at an average of $795.00 a night in the back of the building with no view.

Went to the lunch buffet and all I can say is mehh... too over rated. Sure everyone going to Mackinac say its a must see but for the $30 a head charge it wasnt worth it. Service was less attentive than a regular fine dining place. Had to ask for our drinks twice. Food selection was mediocre and not that many choices. I've had more at a chinese buffet. The ambiance is still there with the formal old fashioned decor but the food was dissappointing.

Six of us traveled to Mackinac Island after having been there many years before. Memories of the Grand Hotel as a very special place brought us all back there. Since we were only on the island for the day and thus not registered guests, we had to pay a ten dollar admission fee to even enter the hotel. We wanted to experience the "Grand Luncheon Buffet", and were ushered upstairs to the vast dining room, where we were immediately struck by the beauty of the historic, well-preserved space. Non-guests are only permitted to dine at the hotel for lunch. Given that registered guests must dress for dinner (jackets and ties for the men, no pants for the ladies), we expected a delightful meal. The $40 per person price tag suggested that we were in for a treat as well. We paid for our meals in advance (cafeteria-style), and were seated a table for four. Although the room is expansive, all of the "luncheon" riffraff were squeezed into a corner of the otherwise empty room. We were so close to other tables that the servers could not maneuver around our table, which led to a lot of reaching in front of us - so much for Victorian manners. Now for the food: Overall, the food was on par with a $19.95 lunch buffet. - To encourage minimal consumption, the plates at all stations except for the entrees were small, salad-size plates. For a slightly indulgent "luncheon", this meant about ten trips. - For $40, one would expect at least a complimentary class of champagne, or even soft drinks - but no. Instead, coffee, tea, lemonade, milk, and water were free. Mimosas and bloodies? $10. - The "salad bar" had one kind of lettuce, and two types of dressing. - All of the pre-cut portions were extraordinarily small. - The shrimp were 15-20 count at best - and had to be peeled! - The salmon and smoked fish plates were empty during a number of our many return visits to the buffet. - All meat offerings were unrecognizable and served at room temperature. For this price, we were expecting a carvery of beef tenderloin. Instead, a desultory employee was serving pressed turkey breast (not making that up). The beef course was an unknown cut with gravy from a can. - Dessert portions were child-sized and the offerings were again truly unremarkable. In Michigan, one hopes for amazing pies - the Grand Hotel's appeared to have been prepared with canned fruit. Cookies paled in comparison to those offered in the plastic containers at our local Jewel or Dominick's. As an additional affront, Grand Hotel employees from all departments are welcome to join the "Grand Luncheon Buffet" guests in the 25% of the dining room into which we were squeezed. What atmosphere - We felt so special! All in all, a grand disappointment at the Grand Hotel. If you want to see the hotel, pay the $10 to get in, but do not waste an extra $30 on this most disappointing "luncheon buffet".

We did not stay at the Grand, but we did pack fancy duds on our most recent visit to Mackinac and sashayed up for dinner one night. Non-guests may dine for $80 per person for 5 courses. You pay in advance for your dinner and pay for any wine or liquor after you eat. The food was very good and creative, especially the fois gras appetizer. The service was amazing: perhaps this is what missing from the experience at the lunch buffet. The pianist was as good as Nat King Cole. But what was most thrilling of all was just walking through that beautiful room behind the maître d'. I felt like the star of an elegant old movie! I don't think you can compare a lunch buffet to the full service experience at dinner. I've had better meals, more expensive ones and less expensive ones. But never have I eaten in a room so beautiful, with such electricity in the air. It is probably true that the food is not cooked to order (really, if you saw how many people they're feeding simultaneously you'd know why) but it is of high quality. The service, as I said, is top notch. For me, it was worth it. It is the real thing, not a pretentious poser.

The $10 fee to get into the grand was well worth it. We enjoyed the lunch buffet with our 7 and 4 year olds. It was significantly less stuffy than I expected. Kacki shorts and a polo were the norm. Service was just okay. The buffet had oysters, shrimp, cold filet, and some great deserts. I enjoyed the blueberry and pecan pies both were great. As a non guest I really enjoyed it. If I were an overnight guest I'd be less enthused about the kid toting crowd in polo shirts crashing the party.

Finally, we made it inside the Grand Hotel. You see, last year we took a vacation and drove completely around Lake Michigan starting in Chicago. One of the stops was Mackinac City/Mackinaw Island. I didn't do my due diligence and thought that there wouldn't be any issues getting into the Grand Hotel. Made it all the way onto the island to only find out that the hotel was closed to the public (non guests) as there was a convention going on. I was livid to say the least. This year, we found ourselves in Traverse City which is only a short (ha), 2 hour drive. Since we were so far up North I knew we had to go to the island for the day. My main priorities were #1 Grand Hotel and #2 Fudge (in no particular order). We made it onto the island, along with 500 million other people (I'm surprised the ferry didn't sink) and made a beeline to the Hotel. We paid our $10/person admission and we were off to explore. We knew we wanted to eat in the hotel so thought "go big or go home" and enjoyed the lunch buffet. The $10 admission we paid was "credited" to the cost of the meal. Yes, the price to eat in the main dining is pricey but it is more about the atmosphere and experience, in my opinion. We were seated right along the window with magnificent views of the porch, it was breath taking. A server came over right away and took our drink order (I believe only lemonade, coffee and ice tea are included which was fine with us). The selections could have been a bit more expansive considering the price BUT we still walked away completely stuffed and uncomfortable. There was salad (I was completely fine with iceberg lettuce as I am not picky), meat/cheese spread, beef, pork, chicken, fresh fruits, tons of desserts and some other unidentifiable selections which I assumed were seafood so I passed. There were a few times we had to ask for a refill but I think it was because we were at the tail end of the buffet hours and things were winding down. It wasn't that big of a deal. I am glad we finally got to go into the hotel and enjoy the main dining room! Bonus that it was lunch time and we could dine with our casual clothing.

Grand Hotel is a special place. To be a part of the traditions of a by gone era is part of the intrigue at this marvelous hotel. Dressing in your finest for dinner each evening, sitting in the spectacular atmosphere of the longest most scenic dining room all while listening to live music (and dancing if you like) while you dine is rare indeed! The wait staff is superb! A highly trained mostly Jamaican staff that is second to none. The three rotating menus allow you to try different mostly European inspired selections on a multiple night stay. The food is very good, not the best we've ever had but that's not the point. It's about the whole Grand experience. Sadly it's an experience that many will never get to try as Grand Hotel is one of only a few rare places like this in the country. Don't miss the opportunity to stay and dine in this historic summer place. If you briefly close your eyes you'll be transported back to another era while dining at the Grand.

We stayed at the Grand for 1 night. The included dinner was over priced. Food was average at best. I would recommend staying at Grand and eating down town.
